Workshop

We make in our workshop the most diverse repairs. Here below is an overview of our activities.

Öffnen vom Insturment Opening of the instrument. The top is unstuck from the ribs.
Examination of the opened instrument, here the back. Geöffnetes Instrument
Stegfüsse anpassen The bridge feet are fitted to the top plate,
then the height and the thickness of the bridge are reworked, Höhe und die Stärke des Steges ausarbeiten
Ausschnitte mit dem Schnitzer ausschneiden and the necklines carved with a knife.
The sound post is adjusted for the tonal adjustment. Stimme einstellen
Hals vorbereiten The neck is prepared for the gluing of the fingerboard,
then the new fingerboard is fabricated and fitted. Griffbrett anfertigen
Aufleimen The neck and the fingerboard are then glued together using clamps and wedges.
Finally, both are trimmed, and a new nut is fitted. Greiffbrett egalisieren
Wirbel ausbuchsen The peg holes are bushed
and retouched. Wirbel retuschieren
Wirbel aussuchen The new tuning pegs are chosen
and fitted. Wirbel einpassen
Retuschen For the care of the instrument, the varnish is cleaned and polished, and the small damages or scratches are repaired. After repairs, retouchings are necessary.
The scroll is removed from the neck. Schnecke
Neues Halsstück A new neck graft is selected in a suitable wood and fitted into the pegbox.
For the gluing, the graft is fixed in the right position using clamps. The new fingerboard, with its nut, is glued to the new piece, and the neck is prepared. Setting the neck in the body is a delicate task, as the centring, the angle, the scroll position, and other measurements must be measured with precision. Once correctly fitted, the neck is glued. Einleimen
Halsstock fertiggestellen The neck root is then finished,
and the neck prepared for the varnishing. Hals
Retuschen The retouchings must match up with the original varnish, not only in colour, but also in quality.
The instrument is assembled, ready to be played, and adjusted. Hals

Bow making and restoration

Bögen Restauration

The new tip plate is made of elephant or mammoth ivory, bone, silver or gold. It is glued on the head with a support in ebony.
The surplus of material is cut with a knife and planed, and the faces are adjusted to the style of the head. Then, the mortice is cut.
A worn lapping can be replaced with a new one in silver or gold. A band in kid or lizard leather is fixed on the grip. If necessary, the stick and the signature can be covered with a protective leather.
In special cases, we also use a fine silver cocoon, alone, or combined with a silk wire, as on this baroque bow.
In the case of worn materials, badly adjusted mechanisms, or for other reasons, the replacement of the screw or the brass eye is necessary.
               Repair of the head.
Retoration of a frog.
After and before restoration.
